A Commodore 64 at On Off Digital World

Apr 13
2011

I happened to be at On Off Digital World some time ago and a sudden sense of nostalgia hit me. That is, that store looked like those “mom-and-pop” kind of places from my youth, back in the days of the ever ubiquitous Commodore 64. I can still see the ad for one of those C-64 system packages in computer magazines of the time, bargains that provided both peripherals and software. Those were the days! Big five-inch-plus floppy diskettes, disk drivess about the same size as the computer itself, clunky box-like CRTs that weighed about forty pounds at least with small fifteen-inch screens! Really interesting software in the past, too — and I mean really amazing, for all the limitations of 64KB! The ’80s were definitely something in every way, but particularly when it comes to matters of personal computing!

For the Community and By the Community

Local backing will always be a basic necessity for the survival and prosperity of hospitals and medical schools. Even smaller facilities such as those dedicated purely to research requires a large helping of such backing, particularly where money is concerned. Typically, benefactors are helpful to more than just one organization, as is the case with Isaac Toussie and family when it comes to the top two leading lights of New York in healthcare education and practice, Weill Cornell Medical College and the North Shore-LIJ network of hospitals and research centers.

Weill Cornell is named after its two single best benefactors, Ezra Cornell, of Western Union fame, and Sanford I. Weill, former CEO and chairman of Citigroup, Incorporated. As one of the most selective medical schools in the United States, it admits only about a hundred hopefuls out of the nearly six thousand that apply each year. Moreover, it was the first to admit women right alongside the men and first to operate abroad, right outside of the capital of Qatar, Doha. It can also claim a long line of famous alumni, doctors like C. Everett Koop, U.S. Surgeon General; Robert C. Atkins who invented the Atkins Diet; Nobel Laureate Robert W. Holley; and Henry Heimlich who invented the eponymous maneuver for choking victims. The North Shore-LIJ Health System is the second largest healthcare network in the country as measured by the number of beds and the largest in New York State based on patient revenue. It serves over seven million people a year through more than forty-two thousand employees – the single largest employer on Long Island and ninth largest largest in the City of New York.

Both are successful in large part due to strong communal backing, whether in the form of charitable contributions by leading businessmen and women or non-monetary offerings such as time and expertise by community volunteers such as those from civic or religious organizations. Indeed, despite a budget in the multiple between them, vigorous local support will never be unnecessary for the health of Weill Cornell and North Shore-LIJ!

Choosing between Small Business Loans and a Cash Advance

Apr 11
2011

Small business loans are how you do it should you have only been in business a short while and don’t have a lot to show for to a traditional lending institution! Most banks don’t care for any but established businesses, and consider such a business the same as a start-up. But it’s possible to find financing nonetheless, in the form of a cash advance. It’s even possible repay everything slowly, almost at your leisure, based on credit card receipts only! In other words, you get to keep all the cash and checks, paying just a small previously agreed upon percentage of the cedit card sales. This is much better than trying to meet a fixed amount every month regardless of income, affording much more flexibility and peace of mind for you!

A Consideration of CPE Courses for Personal Trainers

Apr 10
2011

As a result of out fast-paced society, fast-paced because new discoveries are being made all the time which ends up in things change regularly, even personal fitness trainers need to take CPE courses so as to remain in good ranking professionally.
As a former personal trainer myself, I can say, however, that the standard trainer may still not be as well-informed as such accreditations may wish to imply.

Those employed by chain gyms, which is the great majority of those today, are often children for whom personal training is a gig they happen to have come upon.
At something like New York Sports Club (NYSC), they wear the red tee shirts that say “here to help you.”
Now some are, obviously, quite knowledgeable and rather interested in the subject, but for most it is just a job that appeared to fit nicely with a casual interest in sports.

The certification exam they take is honest and rigorous enough for any employing a multiple-choice format, but it is really nothing more than a memory test and actually indicates no real expertise.
The necessary CPE courses run generally along the same lines, regurgitating facts by rote.
The truth is, these trainers know nothing that could not be obtained by anyone who logs online.

Certainly, one may say the same of any occupation – but when it comes to physical fitness, the very nature of the discipline enables for no small amount of misinformation and outright quackery.
The explanation for this is really pretty simple: no one really knows.

Yes it’s true.
I’m a former personal fitness trainer and the only one who will tell the absolute truth: no one really knows.
Unless he or she is God or was there at the creation of Adam and Eve, no one really knows.
Hence, all the personal trainer CPE courses in the world isn’t going to make up for this basic but shocking truth – “the human body is centuries prior to medical science,” as Doctor Sir Roger Bannister explained.

On Off Digital World

Apr 09
2011

Going to a store like On Off Digital World takes me back to my childhood. I had never much cared for shopping, but I can see how some folks might like it if it involves personal memories. In my case, at any rate, it has to do with experiencing the kind of, well, retail experience I used to have long ago, with exactly this type of store, one that was once found throughout The Big Apple but which has now suffered greatly from the “big box” stores such as Best Buy and the like. Yes, On Off is a throwback to the ’80s and perhaps earlier, no doubt.

Blu Ray Media Offering 25 and 50 GB

Apr 06
2011

Blu Ray media have been making inroads for the past three years but only now do they threaten to finally dominate home entertainment. The specification calls for life-like visual clarity, thanks to 25GB of storage space on a standard single-layer disc.. Though the difference between a VHS image and one from a DVD is noticeable enough, the difference between DVD and Blu-ray is many times that! It really has to be seen to be believed. Small surprise, then, that now that consumers are adopting the new format in droves, a market has grown around recordable Blu-ray media that allows people to preserve their own special occasions in the clearest most life-like manner possible yet.

Shopping at On Off Digital World

When I come across anything similar to an On Off Digital World I immediately remember the good ol’ days of personal computing, the golden age of the 1980s dominated by the Commodore 64 and Commodore Amiga. Well, in fact, despite being the single most dominant player in the field then, corporate missteps back at the head office brought about the eventual ruin of Commodore and so the Amiga lost market share, practically overnight, to Apple Computer. However, it’s a safe and true statement that the ’80s was the decade of Commodore. Those were some good times, what with the medium still very new and many a creative programmer pushing against the technological envelope. Indeed, it wasn’t until the middle part of the decade that a title required more than a programmer or two or three! Even so, no matter than there was less than 64KB to work with – or precisely because of it – among the most imaginative feats of programming excellence took place, such as a full-fledged graphical WYSIWYG OS!

On Off Digital World in the Capital of the World

Apr 06
2011

It’s one of the safest neighborhoods in Manhattan, or, in fact, all of New York City. But the situation wasn’t always this way. Just ask the natives, retailers such as On Off Digital World or one of them few mom-and-pop operations still around. They’ve seen everything, and it wasn’t always pretty. Then again, there’s a certain sort of person, and a certain sort of New Yorker, one that genuinely misses the bad ol’ days. Such people claim that the city was authentic then; it had its problems but it also had a lot of soul, too, plenty of spirit. Today, they grumble, midtown Manhattan is just an internationally flavored version of a typical outdoor mall in America.

Easy Yet Informative Online CPE Courses

Apr 05

So you want to be a lawyer. You realize it will mean a lot of learning, a lot of time invested with books – but you like reading, and figuring things out, and you enjoy words, language, and all the semantic nuances involved.

You even know that the LSAT test for admission to law school is tough, and something to pay hundreds or even thousands of dollars for, for special prep courses, coaching classes and so on. You also know that law school itself will be challenging as nails, at least through the all-too-crucial First Year.

Great. Maybe you even know that you will be forever hitting the books as a practicing lawyer, forever taking online CPE courses and their exams, one after the other, in order to maintain your standing with the professional association governing your licensure.

Super.

But did you know that it will be pretty tough getting a high-enough-paying job as lawyer in order to repay your student loans? In reality, those online CPE courses will definitely cost some money, too.

Oh, you probably think you have got that covered. You’ll graduate at the top of your class, or you’ll be accepted into an Ivy League law school and graduate none too low in the ranks so as to get hired by a top corporate law firm and very easily recoup your investment in two to three years’ time.

And indeed, if such a thing does happen, your odds would be better than those for virtually the rest of your peers, even in this economy. But “better than” does not mean “inherently good.” ’Cause guess what happens – globalization is coming to the legal profession also.

Yes, yes it’s true – outsourcing. Without a doubt, some of the online CPE courses available on the worldwide web were created overseas! And though the legal profession has tried to resist it (after all, it took a whole decade for everyone to switch from WordPerfect to Microsoft Word!), it’s finally started to affect the industry.

On Off Digital World Wants Your Business

Apr 05
2011

For me, On Off Digital World is similar to the old Montgomery Ward in Penn Station, one of those big old old-fashioned electronics retailers that once existed throughout New York City. Such businesses were just mom-and-pop operations that got rather successful, to where they employed like maybe fifty employees — still considered a small business by most standards but clearly still doing well. But it was all before the big box stores and I was but a youth then so they were all “big” to me — after all, there were so many gizmos available! That’s what comes to mind now when I chance by one of the few remaining stores like this.
